The Big Mamma : Carlotta pays tribute to traditional Italian cuisine and interiors and celebrates ‘old school Italian glamour’. Located on Marylebone High Street, Carlotta is the latest project by the Big Mamma restaurant group.
Designed by the restaurant’s in house design team Studio Kiki, the opulent interiors mimic the decadent but familial atmosphere of the late 1980s Italo-American trattoria.
Yes, glamour pervades throughout all the rooms, in the main dining room a swirling pink and turquoise plush carpet lines the floors, while gold mirrors and opulent curtained walls frame the room next to a festoon of rose quartz wall chandeliers. Family is everything, with wedding photographs on the walls to a love-it-or-hate-it 80s mirrors striped ceiling. Skylights beam down onto framed Gucci silks and boxing murals on the walls. whilst supple leather banquettes provide sociable seating.
A glowing marble and golden standalone bar is a meeting point for Carlotta’s aperitivo. Beyond neon lighting and behind velvet curtains visitors find themselves on a terracotta red terrace, another spot to enjoy their drink. At the back, a hidden booth for eight people is available for those in need of a more intimate setting.
Downstairs a suede lounge is on offer featuring an abundance of midnight blue on both the walls and floors. It is here the aforementioned mirrored ceiling is featured – an inevitable talking point – and an open kitchen the heart of any Italian home lends itself to an immersive experience.
